History of HLC:

The Habiganj Law College is the third Law College in Sylhet Division. The people of Habiganj has a long desire to establish a Law College, where their children can study a professional course, LL.B. in two years, and to pursue the challenging but demanding legal practice as the most cherished profession in life. Mr. Md. Abdul Matin Khan, a well reputed Senior Advocate of the Habiganj Bar Association, being the founder, took the initiative to set up a Law College in Habiganj in mid-2008 in association with some other fellow lawyers. Many students of Habiganj, precisely girls/women could not undertake their higher studies for many pragmatic reasons, such as, economic hardship, lack of accommodation and security etc. despite of their commitment, merit and willingness. Because of such harsh fate of life, they had to stop studying incompletely. But the Habiganj Law Collage now offers, the course of LL.B. in two years under the National University, a quality education in low price. Having completed the course successfully, students can pursue an independent career as Lawyer or to undertake job opportunity in other legal and corporate fields.

Eventually, the long anticipation ends on 2nd July, 2011 and the Habiganj Law College commenced its journey in full swing through a formal ceremony. Mr. Justice A.K.M. Fazlur Rahman, the Honorable Judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh inaugurated the College and graced the Inaugural Ceremony as Chief Guest, while Mr. Abu Zahir, the Honorable Member of Parliament, attended the program as Special Guest along with other distinguished guests of the Habiganj District.

Admission in the College, in the very outset, was so demanding among the students that the total number of seats for admission, which were allocated by the University, were filed up within a very short span of time.

Mr. Md. Shakhawat Hussain Khan, Barrister at Law, the Founder Principal of the College, has been working with immense devotion and passion along with a bunch of promising practising lawyers who have obtained their respective degrees from the well-recognised and reputed universities of Bangladesh. The Habiganj Law College is committed to provide a very good and quality education to its students since its inception.

Mr. Mahbubey Alam, the learned Attorney General for Bangladesh and the Chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council, who is a true well-wisher of the Habiganj Law College, visited the College on 1st December 2014 and expressed his satisfaction in the progress of the College.
